Where the Heart Is

Daily Prompt: Stroke of Midnight
Where were you last night when 2012 turned into 2013? Is that where you’d wanted to be?

Starting early yesterday, my phone rang off the hook. Emails filled my inbox. Text messages rang endlessly. Why? Friends and family were inviting my husband and I to spend the evening to say “Good-bye” to 2012 and “Hello” to 2013.

With so many offers to be with those we love near and far, we were really in a pickle. Each invitor had a special place in our hearts and given only 24 hours in a day, we could not accept and attend all requests for our presence. We weighed our options based on the party logistics on Google Maps and realized we could attend three parties. As I began to call family and friends to let them know we would be in attendance, I was caught in mid-dial by this sound, “Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch”. I looked at my husband and he at me, both wondering what that noise could be. Then it happened again, “Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch”.

My cat-mom reflexes kicked in and I started searching for the source of this horrible sound. Sitting at the top level of the cat condo, I found it. Our cat, Mojo, was having sneezing fits from a head cold that came upon him earlier that day. When I went over to comfort him, I could only imagine the sinus headache he had as his right eye was tearing and did not open fully.

Our plans were instantly changed. We are not the parents who leave their sick kids to fend for themselves. So last night, we stayed at home, where the heart is. We said “Goodbye” to 2012 and “Hello” to 2013 nestled together. Mojo’s invitation trumped all.

Happy New Year! God Bless 2013!!
