Jesus said to her, " I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world." John 11:25-28

Name Above All Names

Think about the name you were given at birth. Does your name have a shortened version in which you are commonly called? Do you like your name? Have you changed your name in any way other than by marriage? Are you in a witness protection program and received a new name? Do you have a middle name? Are you commonly called by your middle name and nobody even realizes you have a first name? Are you a male with Senior, Junior or Roman Numerals after your name indicating family succession? Does your given first or last name have rhyming capabilities with not-so-nice words that may have made growing up just a little harder for you? Were you given nicknames by your family and friends that described your physical attributes, something funny you once said or did, or perhaps due to your skills and talents?

Luke 1: 26-33 NIV
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

The angel Gabriel sent the message from God for Mary to call her son (His son) Jesus. No middle name, no Junior or Roman Numerals following, and interestingly there aren’t any not-so-nice words that rhyme with Jesus. Speaking of nicknames, boy does Jesus have the nicknames.

The name given to me at birth is Kristine Marie. For professional or business purposes, I will indicate or write my name as Kristine; however, I do prefer to be called Kris. Some of the nicknames I inherited are few, yet still have been associated with me: Krissy, Fish, Anna B, Kristine the Bean, Baker and Sweetness.

Leave a message in the comments and let me know about your name.

  1. Judith Kay – called jude, jk, jake, bubba and worse, some places Kruis and Judi Kay. and you’re right – names for size or other things bring too many scars.

made me think that Jesus was also identified as crucified and sacrificed.
